Candle Dipping
Saturday morning we made candles at the Burkliplatz in Zürich. We awoke to squeals from the girls as the first dusting of snow had fallen overnight. After our morning pancakes, we caught a bus right to the Burkliplatz to make some candles. The space is quite large. You walk in, grab your string from a variety of length and thicknesses, then get dipping! There are tiny dipping stations for children (children! to dip their hands, I mean strings, into HOT BEESWAX!!!!) and taller dipping stations for adults. Dipping your candle takes time and patience. It is quite therapeutic and relaxing to escape the hustle and bustle of the holiday season (and cold temperatures!) and simply dip candles with your family.
We took a break in the café to let our candles dry. We got a few pastries, hot chocolates, and cappuccinos. It was such a lovely morning to spend together. The girls were concentrating on dipping and making a wonderful candle. At the end, we brought our candles to a man who turned them into any design we wanted. I chose to keep mine plain. It was so beautiful just as is. The girls chose to have theirs twisted a bit, and my husband got a criss cross swirl. So many choices. The total cost for four tall beeswax candles was 20 francs. (Not bad, right?!)
The Burkliplatz candle making tent is open October 31st until December 22nd, every day from 10am-8pm. (Here is the website to find out more information.) It is so wonderful and relaxing, I highly recommend adding this tradition to your Christmas activities. We may head there a few more times before the season is over. We have lovely large beeswax candles to keep or give as gifts.
