Einsiedeln Christmas Market
The traditional Christmas Market in Einsiedeln is one of the largest and most beautiful in Switzerland. We took our family last weekend and it was absolutely gorgeous. We got off the train and walked our way up the cobblestone path past 130 Christmas stalls. Einsiedeln is less than an hour by train or 30 minutes by car from Zürich. It is the perfect day trip with family and friends, especially during the Christmas Market. Also, make sure to take a walk through the historical Benedictine Abbey.
The Christmas Market runs until December 4th so get there quickly to see the world’s largest Christmas crib at the Diorama Bethlehem and stop by the Gingerbread Bakery Museum. Find out everything about the Einsiedeln Christmas Market on this amazing website that even includes a live webcam! You can take a peek at it before you go! Or, if you can’t make it to Einsiedeln, just watch the webcam!
The girls played in the Abbey square’s playground most of the time. We stopped for lunch at the Bären Restaraunt (we made reservations in case there was bad weather as in year’s past to sit inside and heat up in between all the Christmas stalls) and warmed up with their house made soup and the girls chose from the kid’s menu. We sat at a corner table with a view of the Benedictine Abbey and all the Christmas stalls.
In between trips to the playground and the stop for lunch, we stopped at the Rotary Club right in front of the fountains for their free Glühwein, the apple donut shop, as well many wood carving, candle, and heart-shaped Lebkuchen stalls. We might pop over to the Christmas Market one last time this weekend on the way home from sledding or skiing.
