Day Trip to Einsiedeln
A quick day trip from Zürich is the gorgeous little town of Einsiedeln. Only 30 minutes drive from Zürich or about 45 minutes on the train from Zürich HB. The star of the show is the magnificent monastery, the Benedictine Einsiedeln Abbey. I have heard so much about this church, but seeing it on Sunday was amazing. There is a playground, gift shops, kiosks, sausage shops all surrounding the church.
The grandeur, colors, and detail are absolutely incredible. The pièce de résistance is the “Einsiedeln Black Madonna” as you first enter the church. (I was looking all over for it (such a tourist) and then realized it is in the very back of the church. I walked all the way up and then back, finally seeing the crowd of people in the back of the church) The Lady of the Chapel is a sculpture made of black marble from the 15th century.
The town of Einsiedeln has wonderful bakeries. We popped into two just as we were walking away from the church and into the town. It’s a colorful photogenic town. We sat down and enjoyed some delicious käsekuchen (quiche), cappuccinos, and the girls got the Swiss version of a pig in a blanket.
Einsiedeln is a very easy day trip from Zürich. Take the train or the car as there is plenty of parking in a garage under the church. The town is relatively flat with just stairs to reach the church. There are public bathrooms next to the church, many walking trails, and the playground for the kids.
Have you been to Einsiedeln?
